Larkspur Historical Society Newsletter

How about a new year’s resolution to join your local historical society, dedicated to the study and preservation of history? We have a place and a need for your interest.

2006 was a busy year for our Society and 2007 promises more of the same. The Crull/Hammond cabin was opened to the public in May and September. This 1873 one room cabin was shown off with members demonstrating old-fashioned crafts – quilting, embroidering, and crocheting. Douglas County cowboys were on hand in September to demonstrate branding, using historic brands. Pieces of barn-wood were branded and each interested child took a sample home. Due to publicity, we had about 150 quests enjoying those two events. We are planning two open houses in 2007.

We also support other local historical societies by participating in their programs. Early in 2006, Castle Rock Historical Society had a most interesting program at the Philip S. Miller Library, presented by The Shady Ladies of Central City. Later in the year, we attended a day with the Franktown Historical Society, featuring a tour of their pioneer cemetery. We also participated in the Greenland Ponds Youth Project at which time 3,000 fruit-bearing shrubs; native plants and grasses were planted around the ponds at the Greenland Open Space.

We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of an anecdotal book called “Gold, Floods, Murder & More, Real Tales of Douglas County Colorado”. These tales were gathered and put together by the Douglas County Historic Preservation Board. These are amusing and astounding stories, some are first hand accounts from resident’s lives; others made headlines in early area newspapers. Through artist’s drawings, these stories take on another dimension. There are also some never before published photos. This book is for sale for $15.00. Please contact Sue Koller at (303) 681-2824 or Danna Hamling at (303) 681-3738 for additional information.

In April we will plant an evergreen tree at the Crull/Hammond cabin, dedicated to the memory of member, Maynard Giddings.

We are involved in a variety of projects within Douglas County. We would like for you to join and bring your ideas to us. This can be accomplished by filling out the attached application blank and return to Penny Burdick, Treasurer, LHS, 5254 Grimes Lane, Larkspur, CO 80118. Annual dues: $15.00 single; $25.00 family or business; or $100.00 life membership.

Sincerely, Danna Hamling, President, Larkspur Historical Society
