Sallie Thomas Bucks

Sallie Thomas married Harrison Bucks in New Mexico circa 1870s. Sallie’s first husband had died of Tuberculosis in New Mexico. Harrison was a freighter in New Mexico, working the Santa Fe Trail as part of his route. Harrison was part of the 2^nd Regiment, Colorado Infantry in 1861 which assembled in Colorado. He transferred to the 1^st regiment in 1862.

Mr. Bucks homesteaded 160 acres, today known as the “Bucks Place” and received his patent in 1878. Sallie and Harrison lived on that ranch where six children were born. They had fine milking cows and sold butter in addition to potatoes. The children used to play in the buffalo wallows on the ranch.



Sallie died in 1888 at the age of 39, shortly after giving birth to George. Harrison was left to raise the children, ranging in age from eleven to six weeks old. Ada, Sallie’s oldest daughter, helped her father with the family. Harrison passed away at the age of 52 in 1894.
