Jany Richey

Jany first came to a ranch in El Paso County with her parents, Ed (Ebenezer) and Nancy Richey circa 1880. The family, leaving from Kansas, consisted of six children and worked farming jobs as they came west.

Jany was engaged to Lorenzo Leppert at the age of 18, before he contracted smallpox in January of 1885. Jany stayed at his side trying to nurse him back to health and as fate would have it, she became ill and passed away February 25, 1885. Legend has it she was buried in her wedding dress.

Larkspur Historical Society, in tribute to Jany and Lorenzo, married the couple (see photos) at the Spring Valley Cemetery tour on June 19th. Reverend Atkinson (LHS member – Garry O’Hara) played the part of the minister officiating at the wedding.
