Crull Hammond Cabin

  • 1859 - Gold discovered in Douglas County at Russellville.
  • 1859 - Huntsville settlement begun on East Plum Creek.
  • 1860 - William Crull becomes a resident.
  • 1861 - Colorado Territory created.
  • 1862 - Huntsville gets Douglas County’s first Post Office.
  • 1864 - Indian uprisings. Fort Lincoln on Crull Ranch gave refuge to 30 families for six months.
  • 1869 - William Crull is postmaster.
  • 1870 - Homestead claim made by Crull.
  • 1871 - Denver & Rio Grande Railroad built line to Larkspur. Post Office moved to the Larkspur depot.
  • 1873 - Logs of Crull cabin were cut in the fall.
  • 1874 - Cabin built
  • 1880’s - Stagecoach to Huntsville abandoned. Town becomes a ghost town. Crull homestead passes on to Blodget, Clifford, Stebbins, Smith, Wilson and Lohr.
  • 1946 - John Hammond purchases the property.
  • 1947 - Hammond elected sheriff and serves until 1971. In 1960 sheriff Hammond elected president of State Sheriffs Association.
  • 1955 - Mr. Hammond’s daughter Bonnie Bell and husband Darrell and children move to ranch home and live there for several years.
  • 1980’s - The ranch was purchased by Wallace E Carroll Jr. and has recently been developed as “Bear Dance,” a community of 35 acre home sites, a golf course and country club.
  • 2002 - Carroll donated the building to Douglas County to be restored.
  • 2004 - Restoration begun.
  • 2006 - Restoration complete. Grand opening. May 21, 2006.
  • 2010 - A kiosk is added to the site. May 5, 2010.
