LHS Pioneer Portrayals
On July 16, 2026, four early pioneers from what would become Douglas County were portrayed by members of the Larkspur Historical Society. The presentation took place in the Town of Larkspur park. The early pioneers were from Huntsville (1861-1880), and the East and West Plum Creek areas.
Martha Pearl James Grout- Video
Pearl was a pioneering woman who ranched on Jackson Creek Road. You will hear just how hard work was for a settller in early Douglas County. Pearl was characterized by Beverly Noe.
Sarah Ann Coberly- Video
Sarah arrived in our Kansas Territory that would become Douglas County as one of the famous 59-ers. Sarah was the first lady and lady entrepreneur to settle in Douglas County. Sarah was characterized by Kimberly Greer.
Alexander Cameron Hunt- Video
We had the honor of having our fourth Territorial Governor with us. Hunt’s term as Governor was 1867-1869. The accomplishments of A. C, Hunt both in and out of office are diverse. Governor Hunt was characterized by Rodger Greer.
Daniel Chessman Oakes- Video
Lastly, we have Daniel C. Oakes was somewhat a jack of all trades and was instrumental in causing the 100,000 59-ers people who came into Douglas County during the 1859 gold rush. He was also credited with establishing the Indian agencies in Colorado. D. C. Oakes was characterized by Larry Schlupp.
The words you hear from our pioneers are the words used during the time of their history. The people of our Tribal Nations are referenced by our pioneers as “Indians.” Indians in the 19th Century and early 20th Century, reference themselves as “The People.”
