The LHS Community Binders were created by Penny Burdick, Danna Hamling, and other members of the Larkspur Historical Society. The binders are archived at the Douglas County Library in Castle Rock. The digitized content has been integrated into a Google Cloud Storage bucket. Files that have been processed into usable chunks of 10-15 pages, for a total of over 3,000 individual PDF files. The collection may be searched using the AI search button in the header above. For usage and caveats, on the AI search agent, see the Advanced Search page.

Example Binder Content

The binders are archived as PDF files that can be downloaded for further research. Below are highlighted a few images from the Spring Valley binder.

Many historic documents were burned when the Douglas County Courthouse was lost to fire in 1978, making these archives a valuable resource. The inclusion in an 1865 edition of the Rocky Mountain News announcing the Spring Valley Post Office and summarizing President Lincoln’s speech regarding the capture of Robert E. Lee offers a fascinating juxtaposition of local and national history.

The collection of subject matter binders documenting southern Douglas County has been digitized and are also available in the Douglas County Library archive. As an example, searching for “Larkspur Historical Society Binders” will produce documents related to the binder project.
